Maui, Hawaii – Beach Boy Events on Maui is now also Maui’s authorized dealer and island wide distributor for HYPR Nalu Stand Up Paddleboards.  HYPR Nalu, located on the Big Island, Hawaii and founded by Ian Foo of HYPR Canoes, is now offering some of the most technically advanced designs and construction methods on the market.  

HYPR Nalu boards are made of EPS foam core with 3 layers of s-glass on the deck and 2 layers on the bottom and incorporate a parabolic rocker design making the rail to rail transition incredibly fast and fluid. Incorporating carbon fiber and wood laminates in selected models places HYPR in the fore front of board design and innovative manufacturing techniques.  

HYPR boards come in a wide variety of sizes and designs insuring everyone from the flat water recreational paddler to the more skilled wave charging waterman’s needs are addressed.  Sizes begin at 7 foot wave rippers and run through 7’7”, 8’8”, 9’2”, 10’, 10’6”, 11’, 11’6”, 12, to 12’6” down wind race boards.

The Florida Keys have always been said to be a great place to escape to … and if you’re lucky, you find the “Otherside”.

The Otherside Boardsports on the sleepy key called Islamorada is Mike and Shauna Walsh’s “otherside”.  These two and their little man Cody (”free” years old … he’s obviously wiser than his years) have managed the great escape earlier rather than later in life and are living the dream most of us never dare think of.  Surfing and Kiting enthusiasts at heart, they recently got the SUP bug that’s spreading faster than that pig thing.[[Show as slideshow]]

I met up with them at Founder’s Park which is ideally located just down the street from their jam packed little board shop.  Lot’s of mainland escapees (and “Gieco” the Lizard, no shit, that’s it’s real name) showed up to check out Starboard’s SUP deal.

Shauna offers Eco Tours and Mike can teach you just about everything else water related.  Their shop is 2 years young and there’s no doubt this couple is growing into a valuable resource on sleepy Islamorada.

With 3 locations around Florida, Liquid Surf & Sail has you covered for your SUP needs.  They are the latest retailer to jump on the Starboard SUP program.  I paddled with owner Jim DeSilva and his crew Sam and Julian the other night around the Shake A Leg marina in Coconut Grove.  They experienced Starboard’s construction and design elements first hand and realized that Starboard’s line-up was a win for them as well as their customers.  I mean, what retailer doesn’t want to offer the best SUP board?

My personal impressions of the paddle were 1. Julian’s paddle style rocks however “backwards” it appears, 2. Sam will be featured in GQ Magazine and Men’s Health with is new SUP Fitness program … He’s so Florida.  You may also see him working with Corona promoting his “Loaded Corona” drink on a campus near you!  3. Jim’s “Peter Pan” youthful attitude confirms I’m doing the right thing if I want to stay as young at heart.  4. Our dolphin escort during the evening paddle is what it’s all about.  Screw being on a huge boat sitting on your ass and missing their unique effect on your life … now where’s that manatee?

 9/13/09 No Wind? SUP is the perfect activity when the wind dies on South Beach.  The Kite Shop, through its 2 locations, will get you trolling the beach insuring a hook up by the afternoon.  Lots of fish here!

 The beautiful aquamarine water only slightly rivaled the scene on the sand, making this stop one of the best on my Tour of the Sunshine State.

It wasn’t all pretty though; I did see some classic paddling techniques but overall everyone had a great time being introduced to SUP and were quick to ask where to get one!  It was a “add SUP and sell” day for the Kite Shop who is heading up the SUP movement here. I think at least 6 people wanted to buy my sample demo boards! Sorry, go to the Kite Shop for your best deal!

 Look for their rental and lesson program to try it out and have some fun.  Morgan is more than qualified to show you the ropes, having just finished a 28 mile race around Manhattan, I think he’s ready for you!

 And big Alohas to Moglio (Oliver) and Rick; here I am 6,000 miles from my Maui and I meet friends of friends.  Rick and Moglio make up the other 2/3rds of the Frank Forbes (now Maui SUP crazed maniac) modeling trio that was the inspiration for Zoolander!  Great guys however really, really good looking they are!

 And there’s “Frank” who pulls up to the beach in his 600 HP boat to slow things down a little on his SUP.  After a leisurely paddle he was stoked to pull me behind his boat as we tried to pioneer POWERSUP in Miami.  Frank, I had a blast despite the nut slapping wipe outs and the loss of my new shades!  Classic.  Video coming out soon.
