Living here on Maui, said to be the most isolated place on Earth due to it’s 1,000’s of miles of ocean surroundings, is by far one of the most beautiful locales that I’ve found myself at. And with 365 days of sun and surf, having the best polarized eyewear is a necessity. That’s why I only wear Maui Jim sunglasses.

What was once a small sunglass company started in the old whaling town of Lahaina, Maui in the early 1980’s has evolved into an international optical leader in premium eyewear. Maui Jim’s patented proprietary technology keeps the sunny days crisp and distortion free, while keeping the occasional overcast, cloudy days brighter and more clear.

Maui Jim sunglasses achieves this extraordinary task by eliminating 100% of UV light and makes reference to UVA as “Aging” light known as “long wave” light which contributes to the aging of skin and tanning.

A patented 9 layer design including a water proof coating, an anti-reflective “bounce back” layer which prevents eye fatigue, a scratch resistant clear coat, and an optically correct distortion free lens that is bonded to a proprietary polarizing film to eliminate glare and transmit more usable light, insures that your view is the best view! And with over fifty styles to choose from, it’s safe to say that other’s “view” of you will be pretty good too.

Personally, my Peahi style glasses make every day that much “mo’ betta” as the locals say and I don’t leave my house without them. Thanks Maui Jim for an amazingly well designed and functionally superior product!

As a surfer here on Maui, I’m often in the water or at the beach for extended periods of time. A 2 to 3 hour surf session is the norm and the time spent admiring the view certainly adds up. This means hours of exposure every day!

I admit I haven’t always been as diligent with sunblock (or deodorant for that matter) as I should be. There’s nothing worse than having a sunblock run into and sting your eyes or leave you with a greasy grip on your board! But with the advent of products like Watermans that work beyond well, I’m beginning a new era in my sun protection routine. Hopefully my olive skin has saved me to some degree!

Watermans Applied Science – http://www.watermansappliedscience.com – is honestly the first “sun block system” I’ve consistently used. The “delivery” system is what I think makes it so easy and common sensical (not sure if that’s a word, but you get the jist)

What I like about Watermans sun block system: 1. Ease of use; Watermans provides a face and lip stick and a non-greasy lotion. The various appliques cover you perfectly. Lip balm keeps your lips from blistering, an M&M size squirt of the lotion covers your face and the face stick is a great add-on for the cheekbones and nose I found. 2. No eye irritation. Nothing runs into your eyes or leaves you with a slippery grip! 3. It lasts at least a few hours… Watermans suggests re-application after a co uple hours. My experience has been that it lasts throughout some LONG sessions. I’ll apply in the morning and then again in the latter afternoon … I haven’t burned once since using Watermans.

The website also provides information that’s actually interesting to read too … the more you understand it all … the more inclined you are to take action and use their protective system.

Intersting product factoids:

Watermans: Applied Science follows the recommendation of the CDC, FDA, and Skin Cancer Foundation and uses a mix of organic and inorganic sunscreens. The organic sunscreens are commonly known as “chemical.” These agents protect against UV by absorbing the energy from UV rays. Inorganic sunscreens, such as metal oxides or particulate UV filters, are often termed “physical” or “mineral.” The metal oxides, namely titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, are insoluble particles, which absorb and reflect UV. The differences between these active ingredients are primarily based on their solubility, with organic UV filters existing in solution and physical ones being suspended or insoluble. The effectiveness of physical/mineral sunscreen agents depends on their presence on the outer layer of the skin and the effectiveness of the organic sunscreens is dependent on the skins ability to absorb the sunscreen agent. For this reason it is important to find a good mix of both physical and organic sunscreen agents in order to ensure consistent broad-spectrum protection.

UVA – UVA was once thought to have a minor effect on skin damage, but now studies are showing that UVA is a major contributor to skin damage. UVA is a high-energy wave that penetrates deeper into the skin to do its damage. The intensity of UVA radiation is more constant than UVB without the variations during the day and throughout the year. UVA is not filtered by glass. UV-A can be further subdivided into UV-A I, or far UV-A (340-400 nm), and UV-A II, or near UV-A (320-340 nm).

UVB – UVB affects the outer layer of skin, the epidermis, and is the primary agent responsible for sunburns. It is the most intense between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm when the sunlight is brightest. It is more intense in the summer months accounting for 70% of a person’s yearly UVB dose. UVB does not penetrate glass.

Watermans Applied Science has definitely made it easier for me to deal with the important issue of sun protection. Their innovative and comprehensive approach insures that even previously sun baked souls like me stand a chance of an integumentary comeback. And at the rate of protection I’m getting now I may even regenerate some other cells that I’ve surely cooked over the years!

Sanuk is one of those funky little garage companies that in the past 10 or so years has really made a name for itself. From their smiley logo, to the funny animated ads, Sanuk keeps it real and continues to have a good time all while providing the most comfortable and well wearing casual “foot wear” available.

I was sold on my first pair of Vagabonds years ago as I began ditching the trappings of acceptable office attire and slowly introduced a more casual “feel” to my tie collection. I was definitely more “happy and balanced” as the name Sanuk implies. And like all fashion experiments, one influence had to prevail. The ties were burned and the “kinda casual” feeling took over as Hawaii’s song became louder in my head. I think every place has it’s own voice … Hawaii in particular. Don’t you think so?

So here I am living in Hawaii without a closed toe “shoe” to my name. How liberating!

But life on the rock can be torturous on sandals … my once snug Vagabonds soon became thin and frayed. And while o n a recent trip to Florida, experienced the “green flash” and it was evident that their time had come and gone.

So imagine my delight in opening a recent package gifted to me from Sanuk containing 2 new pairs of “not shoes” but sandals! Thank you Sanuk!

The pair of “Fraid So” sandals perfectly captures my sentiments and actual response to that manager that just didn’t “get it” back on the mainland.

The Fraid So is an instantly comfortable sandal with no break in period required. The suede and canvas come together like a reese’s peanut butter cup … perfectly. The foam used in the bed must be a secret formula because no other sandal compares in comfort while the harder bottom layer wears longer than you’d guess! And the funky colored stitching in the canvass strap screams out “drifter”, which is quite appealing in any economy. Hands down, these are the most comfortable sandal I’ve had on my feet. I almost don’t want to wear them out but how could I deny them their birth right in providing me comfort!

The accompanying pair of Kingstons are equally comfortable in that the break in period is nill. Insta comfort. Again, the secret lies in the middle foam bed and rubber sole. I’ll admit, the Kingstons are the closest thing to a “shoe” that I hope to come by. Yes, my toes are covered in the olive green, military style textured canvas … and they’re as happy as can be. Just like my old Vagabonds, the Kingston is snug fitting (order 1 size larger) and well equipped for any hike in the bamboo forest or on the upcountry slopes near by. And the Rasta flair makes me feel like a soljah hiking to my crops! Definitely a fun sandal for the adventu rous when coverage is needed!
