The Starboard Tour pulls in to Pipeline

9/7/09

The Starboard Tour pulls in to Pipeline … Surf Shop that is.  OK, so it wasn’t exactly firing at the beach today on Amelia Island, Florida, home to Pipeline Surf Shop… but everyone still had fun and isn’t that what SUP’s all about?

That’s what I love about SUP, it gets you in the water even when the surf isn’t really happening.  Today’s on-shore wind slop was classic East Coast (a big reason why I moved to Hawaii) and didn’t really offer much in terms of surf.  The newbies however were all over it and their enthusiasm matched Pipe’s any day.  I swear I saw a ride!

Honestly, I was pretty impressed with everyone today.  Conditions were NOT ideal for beginners and yet about 20 people wanted to try it throughout the day.  Mind you it wasn’t pretty and I did enjoy a few chuckles, but only because I knew what they were experiencing!  Who hasn’t been THERE?

Good news is that SUP has taken root in the area.  For those looking to either buy their first board or get something a little more aggressive (I heard there were about 20 regulars!)  than the traditional “longboard” SUP, look to Rob and Melissa Ruy at Pipeline Surf Shop.  They’ll be able to hook you up with the most progressive SUP surfing boards available from Starboard.  Tell’em Tommy sent ya!
